What Will the Climate Program Associate Do?

Based in Berlin, the successful candidate will work on policies designed to support a just transition toward agroecological farming systems in Europe.

One important part of the position involves developing arguments and policy proposals that can help farmers reduce climate pollution while diversifying their farms.

The Climate Program Associate will also examine what it would mean for Europe to develop food production systems that operate within planetary boundaries while protecting human wellbeing.

Another major area of work will involve public finance and determining how public resources can better support farmers and rural communities during the transition toward sustainable agriculture.

The successful candidate will report to the Director of IATP's European office and will collaborate with IATP staff on both sides of the Atlantic.

Main Responsibilities

The Climate Program Associate will contribute to IATP's advocacy for ambitious European climate and agricultural policies.

Responsibilities include:

• Helping develop and implement advocacy strategies related to EU climate and agriculture policy.
• Working closely with civil society organizations and coalition partners.
• Producing articles, policy advocacy materials and data visualizations.
• Monitoring and analyzing EU and Member State climate policies and proposals.
• Examining the climate implications of agricultural trade policies in collaboration with IATP's trade team.
• Working with communications staff to develop social media and other public-facing content.
• Engaging with European Union institutions, national governments and other stakeholders.
• Acting as an expert source for journalists, civil society organizations and philanthropic institutions.
• Managing administrative responsibilities connected with IATP's European office.

The role therefore combines research, policy analysis, advocacy, communications and stakeholder engagement.

Who Is IATP Looking For?

IATP is seeking a candidate who understands the relationship between climate change and food systems and who is interested in challenging the negative consequences associated with highly industrialized and export-driven food production.

Candidates should be capable researchers and writers who can translate complex policy questions into clear and persuasive arguments.

The organization is particularly interested in applicants who understand both science and political decision-making and who can identify realistic opportunities for policy change.

Strong organizational skills are also important, as the employee will need to manage different priorities and deadlines while responding to new opportunities.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have approximately three to five years of relevant professional experience.

Candidates should also have post-secondary education or equivalent professional experience.

Language skills are particularly important. Applicants must be:

Fluent in written and spoken English and highly proficient in German.

Knowledge of additional European languages will be considered an advantage.

Knowledge of the trade dimension of agriculture and food systems is considered an additional asset.

German Work Authorization Is Required

An important requirement for international applicants is that candidates must already be authorized to work in Germany without employer sponsorship.

Applicants who would require IATP to sponsor their German work authorization therefore do not meet this particular requirement.

Berlin-Based Hybrid Position

The Climate Program Associate will be based in Berlin and will work according to a flexible hybrid schedule.

The position requires significant computer-based work and extended periods working at a desk.

Travel is also part of the job.

The employee must be able to travel regularly by train within Europe, particularly to Brussels, where many EU institutions and policy activities are concentrated.

International travel may also be required, including trips to the United States up to twice per year.

Salary: €4,000–€5,000 Gross per Month

IATP says compensation will depend on the successful applicant's experience and qualifications.

The starting salary range is:

€4,000–€5,000 gross per month.

This corresponds to a gross annual salary of approximately €48,000–€60,000, before considering additional benefits.

Employees receive 23 days of annual leave, in addition to public holidays.
